Where to buy fabric to make a silk necktie?

I want to make some silk neckties for Christmas.

What type of silk is best for making a necktie? I see lots of different types when searching for silk fabrics.

And do you have a store you would recommend to buy this fabric.

(I've checked JoAnn and I do not see what I need. I'm willing to pay extra for good quality fabric.)

Thanks!|||It's typically a silk repp that's used. I know of a couple of places in Portland, OR that have some -- but not a wide variety nor a steady supply. Call or email both Mill End Fabrics and Fabric Depot.

How do you wash Vietnamese silk?

i recently bought a vietnamese silk brocade dress. it is a very soft light weave. in soft blues and greens. however, it came with no care instructions. how do i wash this? severaly of my other silk garments say to dry clean only, and some i can hand wash. is there a difference in the fabric that i should be aware of?|||The silk garments in your wardrobe are likely to be among the most expensive and delicate items you own. The traditional approach to cleaning these items is to take them to commercial cleaners, but there is a faster and more affordable way to clean them without running the colors or ruining the fabric.

Things You鈥檒l Need:

Clean, empty sink

Wool cleaner

Vinegar

2 towels

Large zip-top plastic bag

Refrigerator

Iron

Ironing board

Step 1:

Find an inconspicuous area of the silk fabric to test for color fastness. Use lukewarm water and a tiny amount of the wool cleaner to gently rub this small section for about a minute. If the colors appear to run, dry this section immediately and only clean this garment with the help of professional commercial cleaners.

Step 2:

Fill the sink with slightly warm water and add the appropriate amount of wool cleaner by following the directions on the bottle. Soak the garment in the water for five minutes. If there are obvious stains on the garment, rub these gently with your fingers under the water.

Step 3:

Remove the garment from the sink, drain the water, rinse the soap suds out of the sink and re-fill with cold water. Add about 1/3 cup of vinegar to the water and rinse the garment briefly in this mixture.

Step 4:

Drain the sink again and rinse the garment under cold water from the faucet until it appears that the soap and vinegar have been completely rinsed out.

Step 5:

Lay the dripping garment flat on a towel. Roll the towel up to wring the moisture out of the garment gently. Lay the damp garment flat on the dry towel and allow to air dry for about an hour.

Step 6:

Place the damp garment in the plastic zip-top bag and put the bag in the refrigerator for about an hour.

Step 7:

Turn the garment inside out and iron on low heat with gentle pressure.

Tips %26amp; Warnings :

When soaking the fabric, make sure the water is not too hot. Hot water may shrink the garment.

Do not rub aggressively when rubbing stained areas, as this can damage the fabric.|||Send it too the DRY CLEANERS.... just to b safe. i guess if it had no care instructions it might b hand-washable, but the problem is that i might not.it could just be hand made- which would raise the value even more, and then .... welll i cant bear to write it lol|||no, they are the same as other silk fabric|||ewwww idk

What are all the products that were carried along during the Silk Road?

These are very hard to find. The only major product i know that was carried along on the Silk Road is, silk. I'm not really sure what the other products were.|||'Silk' actually ceased to be an important trade item from 533ad on, when two monks smuggled silkworm eggs from the Orient, and brought them to Constantinople. From then on, Europeans made silk for themselves.

The spices are very impt., pepper was almost the value of precious metals...because of its importance in preserving food; without refrigeration, you could have no meat at all in the winter unless it was heavily cured/peppered.

The only thing China wanted in return was silver...This was the one thing she was in short supply of; for some reason gold was not in high demand, and she had no need for Western manufactured goods.

(on silk)|||This road had many branches connecting three distant continents and several major civilizations for two millennia. Goods flowed both ways. Beside silks, Europe and Middle East imported diamonds that were at that time only found in India, precious stones, spices, papers, glass, mirrors, slaves, and fruits. Peaches originated in China and oranges in Vietnam traveled these roads to West. Apricots that grew only around Caucasus were spread to Europe and China; and plums from Balkans could be found all the way in China. Europe/Middle East exported crafted goods, amber, wine, steel, armory, and bronze, copper, or iron bars. Steel was first used in mass by Hittites, but their descendants around present Turkey mastered the process before Chinese making iron very expensive in Egypt and Far East. The steel processing colonies produced quantum of iron ingots for external market and they can be found in Balkans, Small Asia, and Caucasus close to the trade roads. Africa and Middle East was interconnected as well, where ivory, precious stones, slaves, animals, textiles, glass was traded as well. Egyptian goods (glass and textile) were very popular in India, and Indian and Asian spices were needed in Egypt for preservation of bodies. The market was also changing depending on the taste and the wealth of the customers; therefore, some products had disappeared overtime.|||opium, tea, dates, figs, frankensence, myrh,g鈥?such as saffron and pepper.|||I imagine salt and various spices, both of which are valuable in trade.|||Everything that Europe doesn't have and Asia have.

I fixed the link. Try it now. It will take you directly to their men's page.|||They're not silk! They're polyester. And I suggest you don't wear em coz If you get married to her and you want to have kids, wearing boxers won't help your fertility. Polyester, as you know, causes static. The electrostatic field that is produced from this forms an electrical field around your scrotum and ends up hindering sperm production. It also affects the Leydig Cells in the testes which are responsible for producing most of your body's testosterone. If that production is inhibited, it causes your penis and your testicles to shrink slightly as a result. I suggest you try out some cotton/modal trunks/boxer briefs if you like the boxer effect, but you still want comfort and softness. The supposed fact that "tight" undies hinder sperm production is a myth, and it is a proven scientific fact that cotton underwear is better for you - breathable, moisture-wicking and natural. Polyester is man made and isn't good for you down there. If you want good quality, try Bonds or Jockey or something similar.|||Check this page out

How do you set the dye in a silk shirt?

I have a collection of old, thin, pure silk shirts that I would like to cut up and use to make a quilt. How do I set the dye in them so it won't bleed over into the other pieces? I don't know what kind of dye the manufacturers used.|||Many people have success with a vinegar bath to set silk dyes. When raw silk is dyed it is dyed in an acid based dye-bath. The acid help the silk react with the fibres so the colour sets. One of the easiest to find acids is acetic acid, also known as vinegar. Your silk might not be losing dye, it might be excess dye that's sitting on top of the fibres and is merely rinsing out. Try the vinegar trick, regardless, it will help the silk hold onto its color.

How did Leek in Staffordshire become a centre for the silk industry in England ?

I have been researching a cousin's family history and find that whole families were involved in producing silk thread in Leek in the 19th century. It seems odd since silk would most likely be imported and therefore subsequent working would have been close to the port of entry.|||Interesting question, if you want to do further research try Macclesfield which was a bigger centre of the silk industry, presumably not all that far away from Leek, they have the major silk museum in the UK and lots of information you might be able to apply to Leek, look as well to see if Leek was on one of the canals which would answer your question about source.

What is the relative humidity range for silk?

I'll be purchasing a dry cabinet to store an item made of silk in order to prevent the growth of mildew. So what's the best level of humidity? Thank you.|||I once read that humidifier producers recommend not to have more than 45 percent relative humidity in your home to avoid fungus and bacterial growth. I haven't read anything special about silk but I would think that 45 percent is a good value.

Just a precision when it comes to relative humidity: The absolute humidity is the volume of water per volume of air. That doesn't vary as long as the air outside is not replaced by e.g. a moving in low pressure. The relative humidity is the percentage of humidity to obtain full saturation, that varies with the temperature; the higher it is, the more moisture the air can contain.

In the winter, when it is cold outside, the relative humidity may be 100 percent but when that air gets in your home and is warmed up, the relative humidity drops a lot. For example - and excuse me to use metric values but what's what I am used to - a cubic meter of air at 0 C can't have more than 5 grams of water. But at 15 C, it is up to 13 grams. If a cubic meter of saturated air at 0 C enters your home and is heated to 15 C, then the relative humidity will drop by 5 / 13 * 100 = 38 percent and that is dry air.

Silver metallic color shoes, glitzy jewelry and a black clutch bag sounds NYC, too. If you want to introduce a color something that is the same color of the bridesmaids dresses like a pashmina shawl will work. I have a silk dress and YES, I've heard about the hair spray and then laundering it. But since you don't generally launder silk, you send it to the dry cleaner, would that create a spot on the dress?|||Well depends on the color and quality of the dress, it might be impossible to remove the stain. But whatever you do, don't put it in a washing machine, hand wash it would be the best thing to do, and don';t bleach it.

1. Check color fastness of silk first by treating hidden part of clothing. If color transfers dry-clean only.

2. Soak the fabric in lukewarm water with a mild soap for about 5 minutes or less. Make sure the water is not too cold or too hot as this will stretch or shrink the garment.

3. Rub stains very lightly under the soap-water, careful not to rub too hard as this can damage the fabric irreparably.

4. Rinse with water containg 1/4 cup vinegar. This will remove the soap and help restore shine.

5. Final rinse with cold water alone.

6. Take out of the water and wring excess water out by spreading the garment out on a towel and rolling it up. The towel will absorb the water, and the garment will get an effective, yet mild wringing.

7. Leave the garment on the towel and let it dry somewhat.

8. While still damp, place in a plastic bag and place the bag in the refrigerator for half an hour.

9. Take the bag out and the garment out of the bag and use an iron on low heat to lightly press the fabric. Do not iron the outside of the material, but on the inside that is not seen.|||My mom has used Lestoil (it's actually to wash floors) to remove tough stains off of clothes, However, because it's silk, I wouldn't attempt to try and remove the stain yourself. Is it tacky to use fake/silk flowers for a winter wedding?

I am planning on having a winter wedding. Do you think it is tacky to use silk/fake flowers to decorate the church and or reception area. I was thinking of incorporating lots of berries, branches, and different Holiday type flowers and accessories. Do you think it is tacky? What would you do?|||It is not tacky at all! If you have a small budget it really saves you money. A lot of Christmas themed floral items are discounted heavily now. If you can still find them, you should save a lot of money.

My brother got married last month around Christmas time.. They are using all of the decor from the reception as their Christmas decorations for probably the next 5 years. They wanted to do this because they also had a small budget. My sis in law used ornaments and fake flowers/foliage for her center pieces and they looked beautiful!

She also used Christmas ornaments for favors. So I have some ornaments to be reminded of their wedding, which was very special to me.

Fake flowers last forever, fresh ones die in 2 days.

You need a lot of flowers if you want to decorate a church, and that will add up. Silk flowers aren't cheap. However, given that it's a church there's presumably no need to decorate it. You neither have the expensive of buying all the decorations, nor any worries about looking bad from having out-of-season flowers on prominent display.|||I'd really recommend you use real flowers although there are many beautiful fakes available. Use the more inexpensive real flowers and you could perhaps use fake berries; branches are certainly easy enough to come by! However, before using fake berries or fake flowers, go to a large discount store and price flowers, check with a florist and get ideas about prices, or go to a flower market and have a talented friend do flowers for you. I'd prefer to have fewer flowers but real ones personally.|||I used fake flowers and they were cheap and beautiful. I used very tall Eiffel tower vases fake roses. I made them all myself and it worked wonderfully because I know what I like and I didn't have to explain it to anyone. I was lucky because i lived in Los angeles at the time and went to the fashion district and got all of my flowers for under $100.00.

I think the best part is some of my family members got to take them home as well as myself. I think its funny because my MIL has hers on display and she loves telling all of her friends the wedding story. It is nice to have a very important part of my wedding that I can keep on display. P.s. anyone who says it is Tacky is a snob. You can do some wonderful things with fake flowers.|||No it's not tacky at all. I've been to a lot of weddings, and it's a lot cheaper to do fake flowers verses real ones.|||Not at all|||no i dont think its tacky. :D|||If you do silk ones, it may well end up costing the same amount of money as real ones. And I absolutely HATE fake flowers. They are incredibly tacky.

How do I keep my Italian silk tie in good shape?

What are the best care instructions for good quality ties?

and how do I care for a silk tie that is slightly out of shape. I fear dry cleaners will just ruin it.

Any extra tie maintenance information welcome.

Much appreciated.|||When you consider the delicate nature of an italian silk tie materials, most fashion experts do not recommend dry-cleaning them

The disadvantage of silk ties is they look old if carelessly cared for. But with even minimal care, you are capable of retaining its rich finish and gloss for near forever..

An italian silk tie should be hand-washed in cold water using a mild detergent. Do not rub the tie too harshly during washing.

For oil-based stains the sprinkling of talcum powder is a good idea - it absorbs the oil and by this eases the cleaning process.

For water-based stains, club soda or seltzer can be applied to the stained part.

All other Stains that persist could be cleaned with chemical spot removers.

The tie should be ironed after washing. Silk ties require a cool iron. Start ironing with the rear side facing upwards and then follow up with the frontal portion. You may want to keep a cloth between the tie and the iron to avoid the typical 鈥榠roned shine; from appearing on the tie.

A great idea for removing wrinkles from ties is to hang them on a hanger in the bathroom while the geyser is on. The steam from the hot water relaxes the tie fibers and minimizes the wrinkles to a certain extent.

How to remove water stain from silk/satin dress?

I got a little bit of water on my dress from Saks Fifth Avenue for my eighth grade graduation...pictures are on Wednesday. How can I get all the silk off of corn on the cob?

I have a bushel of corn to deal with and I'm having a hard time getting all of the silk off. I have tried a small brush, a dry towel, a wet towel... Any ideas would be appreciated.|||soak it in water, that usually gets rid of it|||I usually just peel the husk off and most of the silk comes off, whatever doesn't I usually just pick off or brush off with my hands|||Just cook it,it should just come of in the boiling water.|||Brushes should help some, but dont bruise the corn. You may NOT be able to get every piece off, but once you boil it the remaining will come off in the hot water.|||I had to shuck a bunch of corn before, what I did was just soak it in lukewarm water for a while, then use a brush on. Just be sure to clean it really good.. because tiny tiny bugs can be in there, and you don't want to eat those!|||Picking at it under running water usually works for me.|||Use a soft bristle tooth brush.|||I soak mine in cold water, then use a very fine vegetable brush, and brush against the grain and it comes off pretty good... good luck!|||After removing the husks, run each cob under cold running water, while rubbing with ur thumbs. Works every time. :-)|||Two things -- I used to work at a farm market and I've shucked a LOT of corn:

1. When you're taking the leaves off, grab the corn silk at the top where it's all together like a ponytail. Peel it back in sections slowly, so you can get as much as possible off without breaking it. Take advantage of the fact that it's all together at that point.

2. Use the little brush for the last of it. You can never get every little bit, because the corn kernels grow around it and then it's stuck. But you can get almost all. Just in step 1, it's usually pretty much done.|||I used to freeze bushels of corn all the time. We just grabbed the top and pulled down getting most of the silk while shucking.

The leftover silk could be pulled out manually and then the stubborn bits freed by using a round bristle brush with handle under running water. (this takes about 3 strokes to get it all)|||Remove corn silk by gently rubbing a damp paper towel from top to bottom of the corn cob, the silk will attach to the damp towel.|||use an old tooth brush works every time... How do you feel about silk flowers at weddings?

Have you seen any that look really good or really bad? I am seriously considering using fake flowers to save money, but I don't want them to look tacky. I do understand that sometimes silk flowers can be as expensive as real, but I have that part covered.|||Hi Sammy,

You can go with artificial flowers. It will only look tacky if you buy tacky artifical flowers, like from a craft store. I've done some research on this for a bride I'm working with and it seems that there is a type of artificial flower called "natural touch," which is supposed to look and feel like a real flower. Even if it's a bit more expensive, I think it would be worth it.

I'm attaching a link below to a site I found that you might want to explore.

Best Wedding Wishes!|||I think they're better because they don't wilt.|||I think they're perfectly fine to use, as long as they're good ones.|||dislike|||I think if you can find good looking silk flowers then they are great, but if it's simply to save money and you really would rather have real flowers you should consider Sam's. If you have one near you and know someone that is a member they have awesome prices on flowers and you can just order what you want and then pick them up.|||Personally I would never use fake floral anywhere near a wedding. I get think its so tacky.

But not everyone can afford real flowers. I would shop around some more, find whats in season and local to save you some money.

I think that a wedding planner is important as well, give them a budget of $1,000 less than what your actual budget so you have money for incidentals.

Thats just my personal opinion.

I am sure your wedding will be beautiful no matter what you chose to do.

Congrats :)|||I personally do not like silk flowers, and yes, they can be as expensive as the real ones if you want them to look good anyway.

I attended a wedding once that had faux flowers, they were arranged very pretty and from afar they looked nice; I did not dare to look more into it though. I knew they were fake because the mother of the bride told me.

In another one, they had both fake and real. The centerpieces had a single, submersed faux gerbera daisy, I could not tell the difference, o the bride told me that they were not real, but I wouldn't have known other wise.

Some people like to keep their bouquet, but that is not my taste or thing, I always think about dusty, discolored flowers with their sad plastic leaves. To each its own.u

Good luck|||I think silk flowers come in different grades, and high quality ones are gorgeous, and if you get the low quality you will regret it. Personally, I favour paper flowers and will be going with them.|||I have seen silk flowers that are considered top of the line and sorry to say, if they look that good people will touch them and figure out they are fake. And these cost as much or more than the real thing

Every other silk flower looks absolutely horrendous. Even if they don't and someone figures it out, it is still tacky in my opinion.

A better option to save money on flowers is to buy real flowers in bulk and do the arrangements yourself. All you need to learn is a youtube video or two.|||The thing I like about them is that you get to keep them as a memento. I used silk flowers for my first wedding and my sister's wedding and they are still in perfect condition. I haven't decided yet about this wedding because I haven't priced real flowers yet and haven't been to any craft stores to check out the silk flowers in the color I want.|||It depends on if you care what other people have to say or not.

I had fake flowers at my wedding...everything except my bouquet. And I had many compliments on how beautiful my wedding was. It also depends on where you live. Its easier to get away with it in more rural areas, whereas if you are having a city wedding your guests are going to expect everything high class and all out.

I say do it, who cares whether they are fake or not. ITS ONLY ONE DAY! They are going to wilt and die at the end of the day so why not save some money on your flowers and spend it on something like your food or entertainment. Your guests are going to remember what they DID and ate at the wedding, not whether your flowers were real or not.

In the end, it is your day. Your guests are going to enjoy your wedding either way, they are going to say you look beautiful, the food was great, and they had a great time. This is about the union of two people who are in love and want to spend the rest of their lives together. If someone is really that concerned about your flowers then they are just being anal and nit-picking your wedding.

Enjoy your day! and Congrats!|||i think silk flowers are really beautiful and they would make great flowers for a wedding|||Since you seem pretty set on silk, there are certain flowers that are simply more convincing than others. One that is really nice in photos is Hydrangea. If you are somehow able to fortify them so that they appear handtied and stalky along the base, the floral portion of Hydrangea are really realistic as silks. Others that are good are gerbera daisies or zinnias, sunflowers and peonies.

How to repair a vintage silk christening robe?

I have a vitage silk christening robe, it's about 80 years old and is a family heirloom.

I took it out recently because I'm about to become a grandmother and there are a few tiny holes near the neck line.

Is there anyway to repair them without it being too noticeable?|||The best way to repair something as valuable as your christening robe is by invisible mending. The results are exactly as the term suggests - you won't be able to find the original hole when it's repaired, I can assure you! It's harder to find these craftsmen and women than it used to be (the easiest way is via an upmarket dry cleaner), but you'll find one at: http://www.invisible-mending.co.uk/index鈥?/a> Otherwise, you could ask someone at a costume museum - they're bound to have an occasional need for invisible mending. You'll find a list at; http://www.fashion-era.com/museums.htm. Good luck!|||You might have to look for fabric that matches and just replace that piece, easy if the robe has a yoke. If it doesn't, you might just want to consider adding a lining, you'll still have the original fabric, but you'll have some added stability that won't stretch out the holes.

If you're scared to tackle it yourself, take it to a seamstress, or possibly a costume shop. Good luck!|||Before you do anything yourself, try to contact a fabric conservationist for advice. How do I get oil out of a silk pillow case?

One of those air freshener wall plug ins leaked oil onto a decorative bed pillow (silk material) and now theres a huge spot! Is it possible to completely rid the silk pillow case of the spot? If so, how? HELP!|||I'm assuming the pillow case is machine-washable?

If so, simply rub some dishwashing liquid into the stain. Let that sit for about 20 minutes. Then launder as usual.

It doesn't matter which brand of dishwashing liquid you use. Most people recommend Dawn, but I've found that others work just as well...Joy, Palmolive, Ajax, even some store brands, like Kirkland.

Dishwashing liquid is made to remove oil. Laundry detergent is not. The dishwashing liquid will remove the oil.

Naturally, if the pillow case is not machine-washable, ask your dry cleaner if they can remove the spot.

-|||If it is silk take it to the dry cleaners they have spotting boards where they can treat the spot and remove it with air or steam . If it is polyester which can look like silk you can spot treat it and wash it.|||try ammonia in warm water with detergent , leave o/night and then rewash by hand

What is the Difference Between Silk and Satin?

I am thinking of getting some new sheets and saw some silk and some satin and was thinking what is the diffference?|||silk is shiney. satin is dull. satin is softer than silk. if youre wanting bed sheets silk will stick to you if you sweat.|||Silk comes from silkworms and I believe satin is a synthetic fabric.|||silk is a natural fiber, satin is a synthetic material.|||Satin is a man-made product. Silk is made from the results of silk worms chewing. Chances are, the sheets are not real silk.|||to correct everyone-silk is indeed from a silkworm, its a natural fiber that can be woven or knit into fabric for blouses, pants, sheets, table linens, etc. It can have an organic smell if woven in the 'raw' form like for mens pants.

Satin is acutally a type of weave that creates a shiny surface weather it is woven in silk, polyseter, cotton or any other fiber that is used to weave fabric. Its a complicated weave, its woven with a warp and fill yarns to create a base, then thin threads of yarn, float across at a slight diagonal to fill in the area over the crisscross weave, to create a finish, called satin, on the fabric. Its shiny; the shiner the yarn-the shiner the fabric's finish. Syntheic yarns seem to reflect more light than natural fibers, like silk %26amp; cotton yarns.

Now, to answer your question - most satin sheets are polyester, which is synthic, it causes static cling..I hate them for sheets or pj's. Silk will have a little static and will be very expensive. Some cotton sheets that are in a higher thread count, 400+ will feel like silk, cost less and be easier to maintain. Ive seen the softest, softest cotton sheets for $1500 a set(fitted, flat, 2 pillow cases)....nice sheets man...

How do I fix a silk tie that is curled at the edges?

I got a tie that for some reason is curling on both sides. I guess the silk on the outside shrunk, thus bringing in the sides. It's really annoying but I hate to throw away a nice tie. Ideas?|||My Grandma taught me a trick for unruly clothing; clothing which is generally made of delicate material.

Get a few sheets of plain white paper, place over the tie. Then put your iron on the lowest setting. Iron the tie with the paper between the iron and the tie. This should flatten out the curling without damaging the material.

Hope this helps!

What's the probability of finding an exact match with the silk fabric of my childhood blanket?

I its possible to find the exact same stitched fabric? Black silk. Where would I go to find a match?|||Fabrics change so often you cannot even find what is shown in quilt magazines unless you order their kits.

So, the chances are zero.

Black would seem easy, but once you start comparing, what you think is black may be brown-black or gray-black.

Keep looking and consider replacing all of the black if you are replacing a portion of the blanket.

Are you sure the fabic is silk and not poly?|||Your chances are almost none. Fabric that is woven on the same day may have differences from bolt to bolt. I'd suggest you start visiting fabric stores -- JoAnn's, Hancock Fabrics, and local quilt stores. Take the blanket with you, or take a very good close up picture. You won't find the exact fabric, but you might find something close.|||Depending on how old you are, it might be quite difficult to find the same fabric. It changes just like everything else. What is the easiest and safest way to clean algae off of silk aquarium plants?

I have a bunch of silk aquarium plants and would like to know the easiest and safest (for the fish) way to clean algae off of them. Its the brown algae not the green.|||Depending on the size of your tank, you could add a siamese flying fox - they will consume brown algae - not all algae eaters will.

I soak my silk plants in a bucket, the rub the leaves between my hands - this seems to get the algae off rather well.|||All the answers are good from magnetic cleaners to scouring pads work and certain algae eating fish work. You have an excess amount of nutrients in your tank. You'll need to do Partial Water Changes (PWC) weekly as a regular part of tank maintenance and test your aquarium water for pH levels, Ammonia levels, Nitrate and Nitrite levels too. My guess is these are high probably from poor tank maintenance and overfeeding. If your tank is over-crowded, you will have a lot of ammonia and a lowered oxygen amount in your water. Like wise, if the pH is on the high alkaline side, ammonia poisoning is a constant danger. The filter converts ammonia and ammonium into nitrites and then into nitrates. If nitrate levels become too high (150 mg) per liter of water, it should be lowered by PWC's and will harm fish and plants, especially those of the Cryptocoryne species and then the rotting stuff will raise levels.

I use a green scouring pad to clean algae off my inside the tank glass and a razor blade to get the water lines off the glass which are mineral deposits from hard water out of the water pipe. Take the decorations out and clean it with a pad and running warm to hot water.

You also need to let us know what kind of algae you have whether it's green, brown, or any other type.

I can give you a website that will help you. Just copy and paste to your browser and you can read up on it.

http://www.theaquariumwiki.com/Brown_alg鈥?whatever you do,

DO NOT USE HOUSEHOLD CLEANERS to clean your stuff. Be sure to do about a 40% water change ASAP and get yourself a gravel vaccum from your local pet shop and clean the waste that has accumulated in the gravel to help bring the high levels down. Sounds like you'll need to do more than just look at the fish and feed them from now on. I also recommend you try and get a better filter for your tank. Hope this helps.|||Go to your local lfs and ask them what types of algae eaters(such as a pleco, snails, chinese algae eater, oto cats, etc) you could put in your tank that would be compatible with your existing fish. Its always easier if someone else does the cleaning for you, and watching your tank get cleaner without the work is always a bonus.|||When performing a water change, take the plants ot and rinse in the water removed.|||You should take them out and wipe them off. Then put them back in. It might make the fish tense, but they will be ok.|||Don't they still sell algae eaters?

I wish to make neck tubes/balaclavas for outdoor pursuits in silk fabric. What would be the best silk to use?

I believe silk is a cool breathable fabric for warm weather, and warm and comfortable in cold temperatures? I wish to use this fabric as I think it would be better against the skin - but what type of silk would be the most practical for this purpose? Also can anyone tell me where I can find reasonably priced suppliers of silk fabric in the uk, preferably via internet? Thanks.|||Silk is a natural protein fiber, some forms of which can be woven into textiles. The best-known type of silk is obtained from cocoons made by the larvae of the silkworm Bombyx mori reared in captivity (sericulture). The shimmering appearance for which silk is prized comes from the fibers' triangular prism-like structure which allows silk cloth to refract incoming light at different angles.

"Wild silks" or tussah silks (also spelled "tasar") are produced by caterpillars other than the mulberry silkworm (Bombyx mori). They are called "wild" as the silkworms cannot be artificially cultivated like Bombyx mori. A variety of wild silks have been known and used in China, India, and Europe from early times, although the scale of production has always been far smaller than that of cultivated silks. Aside from differences in colors and textures, they all differ in one major aspect from the domesticated varieties: the cocoons that are gathered in the wild have usually already been damaged by the emerging moth before the cocoons are gathered, and thus the single thread that makes up the cocoon has been torn into shorter lengths. Commercially reared silkworm pupae are killed before the adult moths emerge by dipping them in boiling water or piercing them with a needle, thus allowing the whole cocoon to be unraveled as one continuous thread. This allows a much stronger cloth to be woven from the silk. Wild silks also tend to be more difficult to dye than silk from the cultivated silkworm.

Silks are produced by several other insects, but only the silk of moth caterpillars has been used for textile manufacture. There has been some research into other silks, which have differences at the molecular level. Silks are mainly produced by the larvae of insects with complete metamorphosis, but also by some adult insects such as webspinners. Silk production is especially common in the Hymenoptera (bees, wasps, and ants), and is sometimes used in nest construction. Other types of arthropod produce silk, most notably various arachnids such as spiders.|||You are correct that silk is suitable for outdoor weather and it would be a good idea to use for a balaklava....

I have spent over an hour trying to locate a stretch silk fabric in the UK, as well as the US but I cannot find a place that lists any on line. I did find one company that had a stretch chiffon silk in the US. http://www.denverfabrics.com/Merchant2/m鈥?/a>

A Balaclava/neck tube really needs to be of a stretchy fabric. I've made a few in my time for my husband and kids and always used a knit or stretchy fabric....so.... I have an idea for you.

How about purchasing a set of Silk Long Underwear such as found in this link: http://www.nznature.co.nz/mshop/spi//5_T鈥?/a>

Cut the balaklava/neck tube out of the fabric in the long underwear. You could purchase a "large or Extra-large" set so you can utilize as much of the fabric as you can.

It may be easier than trying to locate appropriate silk fabric...

Of course, no one will know that you are wearing underwear on your head unless you tell them!

How do I get ink off my hands, from a silk screening job?

I work as a printer at a silk screening plant and I have the worst time with getting all the ink off my hands, and especially under and on my finger nails. Anyone have any ideas? I've tried alcohol, and baby wipes, neither works.

Thanks!|||First, DO NOT USE any thing like m.e.k or chemical solvent. ( it ends up in your liver and is TOXIC! Try some thing less harmful like wd40. It removes ink, oil, paint and more.|||last time i dyed my hair my friend got dye on her hands, she used cigirette ash to remove the dye. i thought she was full of it but it really worked.|||Go to a nail supply store (Sally's) and buy pure acetone (polish remover) it will take it off :) Make sure you wash your hands well afterwards and if you use on a daily basis just make sure that you use lotion on your hands as this sometimes dries them out|||Can you wear latex gloves? Not the kind you wash your dishes with, but the shorter/thinner and more form fitting kind? It might prevent the ink from getting on you in the first place.

Otherwise, maybe using some diluted paint thinner would work.

How can I get my design on paper onto the silk screen to put on a shirt?

I recently bought every needed to begin silk screening online, and it will be here in a few days. I was just wondering how I can get the designs I have onto the film that I is used on the screen to make the image. Do I need a special printer or something?

Thanks in advance!!|||There are three methods that I know of. One is with cutting away parts of the coating on the film with a craft knife. You would lay the film over the design and cut away where you want the color. If using multiple colors you would need to cut separate pieces of film for each color and use a registration mark to make sure of proper placement.

Another method is to paint on a design on the silk screen material, then coat where you do not want paint to come through with another solution. You should be able to place your design under the silk screen material and copy it.

Another method is burning the film using light. There is a fairly new YuDu machine by ProvoCraft which uses light to create the silk screen. You would follow the machine directions about placing your design and the silk screen material together and exposing it with light.

How much would a silk fabric cost a yard?

Does anyone know how much a silk fabric would cost at Wal-mart per yard or any other store and also what are the care instructions.

Lace (any fiber) how much would it cost and care instructions?

satin (any fiber) how much? and care instructions thanks!|||Check out one of the many online fabric stores for prices. Really beautiful quality silk will be expensive.

Silks and delicate fabrics, such as lace, require dry cleaning to ensure they retain their appearance.

Silk undies such as bras and panties could be handwashed, in cool water, with a mild detergent.|||There are so many different types of silk, it's hard to answer your question. Some silks wash beautifully in a machine and some need to be dry cleaned. It depends on what the use for them is as to what type you're looking for. They can range from inexpensive (comparable to cottons) to very expensive (shantung and hand-loomed) and everything in between.

Lace ranges from 10/yds for $1 for cotton eyelet at Walmart to $100s of dollars a yard for hand re-beaded Alencon'.

Satin is also dependent on type. (BTW, "satin" is a type of weave, not a fiber) Are you looking for a poly satin or a bridal or a duchess? A poly satin lining can be $1 yard, heavy satin for dressmaking can run $10/yd or more. Do you want a crepe back, or an Antique, or a silk satin? You can pay $50/yd or more for Antique slubbed Italian satin.

Without knowing what you need it for there's no way to say how much it will cost or anything else definte.

How do I get rid of static cling on my silk dress?

I'm wearing a silk dress with opaque black tights tonight to the theater, and when I did a test run with the outfit, I had some serious static cling on my thighs and butt. How do I get rid of this? I've read that you can use a fabric softener sheet, but does that really work? Does it have to be a certain kind? Any other options? Thanks in advance!|||to simply answer the question you asked, yes. the fabric softener sheet will work. any kind. rub it on your dress (on the inside) and rub it on your tights. it won't leave a residue. you might want to bring a back-up as someone suggested. depending on where you go, if you're in a car with a heater on, that warm, dry air can make the situation reoccur.|||the oldest trick in the book is "lightly" spray your clothing with Hairspray and it works been there done that and if your still worried take a fabric softner sheet with you and should you need it (and you won't) rub the softner sheet on your clothes.|||Take a wire coat hanger and run it along the dress. This usually takes care of it. Good luck :)|||Static Gone or another brand of anti-static spray available in the laundry isle at most grocery or discount stores works, but don't spray it on the dress. Spray the slip under the dress or the top portion of the tights that will be covered. They rarely but sometimes leave a white residue.

Pin a steel safety pin to the slip or your tights, and it will help discharge the static. In a pinch, an ordinary steel paper clip will help, but they can have blunt ends that will snag your tights or the fabric of the dress.

Edit - oh, the fabric softener sheets. YES they will. Wipe down the inside of the fabric lightly. I knew a lady who tucked one into her pantyhose to fight cling. I don't know if that is actually helpful, but she smelled good.|||eat ice cream?

Whats the difference between silk screening and screen printing? Is one less expensive or easier to operate?

The two terms mean the same thing. It is a procees that involves burning a silk screen and then pressing ink through the screen, in the imaged area, onto a substrate of your choice.|||I believe they are the same thing.

For mass produced signs screen printing is the way to go. There are alternatives, like vinyl lettering, but it is usually more expensive, and takes longer to make each sign. But if you are only doing one or two signs, it is better to do vinyl lettering, because you don't have to etch the silkscreen, ink it, and clean it and all of that. Hope that helps....

Stevo.|||Usually we use a silk screen to mount our stencils for printing. The stencils may be hand-cut or photographic. When people say screen printing they normally refer to the same "silk" screen, no other matters as this material is the only one that facilitates fine print results. It shouldn't be so expensive.

Good luck to your business!

Where can I get silk flowers wholesale for a wedding?

I want to get silk flowers for a cheap price for my wedding, where can I get cheap high quality flowers?|||I had artificial gerbera daisies at my wedding and I got them all from www.save-on-crafts.com. Their website is a little awkward and weird to navigate but I didn't have any problems. I ordered about 300 flowers and they arrived in perfect condition.|||Why silk? Why not real? Not wholesale, perhaps . . . but I thought these prices seemed reasonable.|||I tried to go that route and found that real was much, much cheaper. Try wholesale rose dealers online. There are several. What can i use to clean dried ink from a silk screen?

I have silk screens, with dried in ink on them. What is the best thing to use to get the ink out? I have already tried soap and water and white spirit and these have not worked.|||Is the ink on the screen water based ? If it is a very old screen it could be oil based which would be very difficult to remove.

I might try some washing soda crystals mixed with warm water e.g., 200 gram per 1 litre of water. Try it on a corner area and just leave a soaked rag on the area.

We use this solution at out print workshop to remove photo emulsion and various other acrylic resists from plates. Your water based silkscreen ink is most likely an acrylic based ink.

If you have access to a print workshop they would have special products for this which would do it and not risk harming the material on the screen.|||I am afraid nothing will really clean the screens. Try thinners like acetone, or turpentine but nothing can really help once the silkscreen is dry with the paint on it. They are cleaned industrially with a special equipment to blow strong airflow or the silk is simply replaced. Sorry fo that!

You can find this at many fabric shops|||Yea. I sewed lining on a croched hat. That would be easier.|||You could, but silk is not practical for babies. It generally doesn't wash well.

Assuming you have a synthetic, washable yarn, I'd pick a soft cotton - maybe even a flannel - and wash and machine-dry it to pre-shrink it before using as a lining on the other side. You may also want to tack the lining at intervals rather than just sewing it on at the edges, so it doesn't shift around.

What is the best way to iron a silk blouse?

My wife bought a silk blouse and it has some wrinkles in it and she wants to iron it. Is there a correct way to do this so it will not damage the blouse?|||You can iron silk with a warm iron. If you are worried about scorching the silk, you can cover the fabric with an all cotton (or men's handkerchief) cloth. Has she tried steaming it? Sometimes you can get your iron to shoot steam and just hold it parallel to the blouse and steam it. . . .|||turn it inside out and use a steam iron setting at medium|||The are a few ways to iron silk clothing. The one I find to be tried and true is to hang the silk garment in the shower and let a steamy shower do the work for you. It doesn't take a lot of water or time.

If you have a steamer... that's even better but most people have irons rather than steamers.

Now you can iron it but you have to be careful. You can A; set the iron to delicate or silk/linen if you have that setting and give that a try. Me personally, I don't trust that all irons heat as desired for those kinds of fabrics plus if you don't know exactly how the current in your home is you power could be fluctuating.

Or you can turn your iron to steam and fill the reservoir with water and have the garment hang on a door or rack and just steam the wrinkles right out. It is very easy and the is almost little risk to the clothing and you should be looking posh and sexy in no time..

Take care|||As for me, I'd play it safe and let a cleaners take care of it.

But if she still wants to do it herself, her iron will have the word "silk" on it. She needs to use that setting. BUT just in case her iron is on the hot side, have her test it on the blouse where a burn cannot be seen.

Or, try a few tablespoons of salt inside of a plastic bag鈥攕hake, and then make sure all residue is gone. Also effective with dried flowers.

Can I attach silk flowers to fabric using fusible web?

I have a Christmas sweatshirt with silk poinsettas fused onto it but can't figure out how it was done.|||You may want to use a product called Heat and Bond, sold at fabric stores. Heat and Bond comes in several weights, so be sure you select the correct weight and follow the directions. You will be amazed at the results and it is totally washable, too.

Happy Holidays.|||There is actually more than one to do it. You can use fusible web - use the "light" one, you can use a fusible powder (Aleene's is one brand), use LiquiFuse (looks like glue but fuses with an iron just like the web). I would go with the liquid for silk flowers since it is easier to apply precisely.

Does the light silk soymilk taste different than the normal one?

I tried Silk vanilla soy milk and I don't like it. I thought it was kinda thick. Would the light be thinner? Or maybe I needed to try original and not vanilla.|||That's how I feel, it's too sweet. Vanilla soy is good in lattes however because you dont need any extra sugar!|||vanilla has a lot of sugar in it...Light regular tastes fine...light is less calorie not weight/thickness...soy is an acquired taste
