What kinds of silk plants can I use in my aquarium?

I have a large salt water aquarium but the problem is it is really tall and I can't seem to find affordable and tall enough silk plants for decoration. I wanted to go to the craft store to purchase these. What should I look for? Obviously nothing with wire or metal that can rust but is there a better type to look for or does anyone know a good online store?

Thanks!|||Artificial plants have come a long way since they were first introduced and now look more realistic than ever. Their durability also makes them suitable to be kept with fish that would destroy live plants and those that would eat the real thing. They are useful for hiding equipment and making areas feel more secure for nervous fish, and, of course, they will tolerate any type of water.

Many species of fish are found in the vicinity of live plants in the natural world, but they are there to eat them as well as use them for cover. Using artificial plants in place of live plants provides an effective solution to this problem, since they can provide cover without being on the menu.

Silk is an alternative material for replica aquarium plants, and because it is finer material than plastic, the plants move in the water more naturally and have realistic leaf shapes. They are cheap and can be mixed with live plants and not stand out as being fakes. Many types are available and they are easily anchored in the gravel.|||Blue Ribbon Pet Products recently added silk plants to their products. They have some very tall and full plants. Call around to see which stores carry them. Some manufactures make tall plants, but aren't very full.|||DO NOT get silk plants from a craft store. They are full of dye that could kill the fish. Buy them from a fish store. The are specially make for fish tanks.

How to paint silk fans using fabric or copic markers?

I bought some silk fans this weekend and want to paint Chinese designs on them. I don't prefer paintbrushes and have been looking into using copic markers. Will these bleed/wash out? Is there a less expensive alternative such as fabric markers?|||I haven't heard about copic markers, but yes there are fabric markers available in fabric stores. I have included links from a few manufacturers.

Whatever you use, I would get some "scrap" silk or a similar fabric and practice first. I don't know if you would heat set the painted silk, like you often do with cotton.

This sounds really interesting and I would like to see the results!

How to store silk wedding flowers?

I have a brand new silk flower bridal bouquet, but the wedding isnt for 2 years! Is there anything I can do to store the bouquet to keep it looking as pretty and fresh as it does now?|||Keep it in a dry location, place a bag over it to keep the dust off, and keep it out of sunlight and away from lightbulbs as constant light will start to fade the colors. Also don't lay the flowers down to get crushed, keep them in a vase or something to keep them in their current shape.

How much would silk cost in the time of Alexander the Great?

How do I clean a silk blouse?

I just bought a silk blouse, and I know that you can't put it in the washing machine. You could try the home dry cleaning products that work in the dryer.|||Most tags advise to dry clean; do that when it needs it. If you do it too often, like anything else, the threads will begin to wear. However, dry cleaning isn't necessarily sure to work if you have liquid stains. At this point, you would need to hand wash with a delicate detergent such as woolite or baby detergent like Ivory. This "water washing" will mitigate any the severity of the stains on your silk. Only use the dryer method if you want it to smell better, it won't necessarily get it clean.|||Silk really needs to be dry cleaned. I hand washed a silk blouse in Woolite. Laid it flat to dry and ironed with a cool iron. It was okay, but it lost that new appearance.|||Hand wash with cold water and Woolite, or something similar. Iron. What good brands of mineral makeup use silk powder?

I've noticed Lumiere does one of their foundations (Cashmere), in some blushes and radiance too and two of their finishing powder formulas. I've sampled these so far and love them.

I was wondering who else has silk in some of their formulas; other than Silk Naturals...I find them way too sheer and there isn't much silk in their ingredients anyway.

Any other brands?|||You found two of them! lol I agree, out of those two, definitely stick with Lumiere Mineral Cosmetics. Silk Naturals is okay, but not a favoirite of miner either. Terra Firma Cosmetics also carries a silk powder foundation. Their shade selection isn't very big and not the greatest at giving descriptions. Aromaleigh sells a nighttime treatment powder called Nocturne that has silk powder added into it too %26amp; they too have a silk powder primer. Anna Bellina uses silk powder. Ocean Mist is another that has some products with silk powder, but they do use kaolin clay in some of their formulas too. Everyday Minerals has some finishing powders with silk.

My favorite out of all those I've tried is Lumiere's Cashmere foundation, Veena Silk Veil and the Silk Radiances/silk blush, so you are in good. =) With Cashmere though, you should try applying it wet with Lumi's duo fiber optic (it's a MAC 187 duper) and the coverage is amazing...very light, airbrushed and flawless. Cashmere works perfectly for this! Tip: make sure it's a very thin consistency and use a hydrating mist for the liquid (if your skin is dry)....also make sure you don't have any dry flakes and use a good moisturizer first.

If you aren't concerned about ingredients like bismuth oxychloride, then even e.l.f.'s mineral makeup has silk powder in it. There are drugstore brands that also include some silk in their ingredients.

You can do a google on "silk mineral makeup", "mineral makeup with silk" and even "silk powder" and you'll find a good few others too.|||covergirl

How can I remove grease stains from a silk skirt?

I accidentally split oil, could be olive oil, onto my skirt. Sprayed it with Vanish and washed it on a delicate wash but the stains have not gone. It is a silk skirt and says dry clean. Any ideas how to remove oil? Thanks|||Things You鈥檒l Need:

Cornstarch

Liquid dish detergent

How to Remove Grease Stains From Silk

Step1Flatten the section of silk with the stain on it. Clothes or drapes can easily lie flat. If the stain is on a piece of furniture, smooth the section of fabric.

Step2Sprinkle cornstarch on the stain. Pat the cornstarch into the stain, pressing to make a thick layer. Leave the cornstarch on the stain for 24 hours.

Step3Brush the cornstarch away from the stain and shake the piece of silk or brush it hard (if it is on a piece of furniture). The cornstarch should absorb the grease. If more cleaning is required, continue with Step 4.

Step4Rub a small amount of liquid dish detergent into the grease stain on the silk. Let it sit for a few hours.

Step5Rinse the dish detergent from the stain. Let the fabric dry.|||I would take it to a good drycleaners, show them the stain and tell them what you think it is, and let them handle it. Otherwise I think your chances are good that it will get ruined. Good luck!

How should I refashion a silk shirt?

I got a nice button down silk shirt from the thrift store today, and I'm planning on dyeing it and doing something with it. There's no way it's gonna be a shirt for me (waaaay too small), so I'm not really sure what to do with it. I'm a pretty decent sewer, but I have zero experience with silk, so some ideas would be very welcome.|||Rivers, being a Xmas freak, would cut it into as big of pieces as I could, around the seams and the buttons, and plan Xmas ornaments with it.

If some of the pieces were big enough, I would make doll dresses and accessories. One of Barbie's dresses [I'm making clothes for two little honorary grand daughters] needs a stole, I will fold it and sew it to make a 1940's look.

Save it. Collect more silk, don't dye it, yet, and save up for a beautiful silk patchwork or applique quilt. Or a pillow.

Silk does not lend itself to everyday things, like pincushions, but that would certainly be beautiful.

What is the difference between silk wrap and acrylic nails?

Hi i want to get my nails longer and i herd about silk wrap. what is it? and which one acrylic, or silk wrap is better for your nails? Thanksss|||Acrylic Nails

Artificial or Acrylic nails are basically made by mixing a particular powder and liquid. Acrylic nails are best for those who are unable to grow their natural nails for varied reasons.

Silk Wraps

Wraps are pieces of silk, linen or fibreglass that have been cut to a desired shape and glued to the nail plate. This adds strength, and sometimes length, to the nail. Also though applied on top of natural nails, wraps are most commonly used to strengthen tips. Silk is the most natural-looking wrap and provides a lot of flexibility, but it is often too delicate for those with an active lifestyle. Linen is stronger, but not transparent and appears quite thick. Fibreglass provides the best of both worlds since it gives the natural look of silk and the strength of linen.

What is the best way to prepare a silk velvet for sewing?

I am making a floor length silk velvet gown. While the dress will not be worn often, I do think it may be steamed a few times, so I want to preshrink the fabric before cutting. Has anyone here had any experience doing this? Should I just steam it with my industrial steamer? Should I take it to a dry cleaner?

I appreciate any pointers or advice.|||I've never used this fabric, but all my sewing magazines and books always say to prepare the fabric with the same cleaning treatment that will be used after the garment is sewn and worn.

Search elsewhere on the internet under "silk velvet gown preshrink" or something similar. Maybe you can find something within all the sites selling it. Call local fabric stores, they may be able to help. You can also ask the dry cleaner what to do if you wish.

I'll look for you and come back with an edit if I find anything.

EDIT: This site says to dry clean. http://silkery.com/sewing.html|||If the dress will be dry cleaned, have the fabric dry cleaned first. What is the best way to iron a silk blouse?

My wife bought a silk blouse and it has some wrinkles in it and she wants to iron it. Is there a correct way to do this so it will not damage the blouse?|||Yes, turn them inside out. 3.) Using the dish soap circle (you MAY want to add more dish soap at this point), and an old tooth brush, scrub the stain.

4.) Launder as usual.

GOOD LUCK!!

How to iron silk?People say to iron silk you need to do it in low heat inside out. How to iron silk?

Twice already I burnt a hole trough my silk dresses. People say to iron silk you need to do it in low heat inside out.|||Most irons have a "silk" setting. Use a pressing cloth if you are nervous about it ( a dampened piece of muslin, pillow case, etc ). Lay the pressing cloth over the silk item and iron over top the pressing cloth. It is probably best to iron silk on the wrong side to avoid any shininess that might develop in the ironing process from showing.|||I always iron inside out any garment. It comes out nicer. Silk is one of the most durable fabrics. I would use low heat, and if you are apprehensive, put a cotton towel between the iron and the fabric.|||perhaps you should try laying a pillowcase over it while ironing. if you turn it inside out to iron your creases will be inwards while wearing the dress. turn the heat up a bit, and use the case as a protection barrier.

What is the cheapest way to make silk screen shirts, without doing it yourself?

What's the cheapest way to use a photo (300 dpi) as your image for the silk screen shirts?|||If you want something to be silk screened, you need a fairly large run to keep the costs per item down. You would also pay for the artwork set up. Your best bet, especially if this is a small run, is to find someone with a DTG (direct to garment) printer. It will print your design directly onto the item, such as a shirt. The quality is very good and the price is reasonable. Contact silk screeners or embroiderers to find out who has one of these.

How do I clean silk neckties?

I have 2 silk neckties that have small food spots on them. I have been told that they cannot be dry-cleaned or washed traditionally since those methods remove the natural sheen of the silk. Does anyone have any other ideas? Thanks!|||very gently by hand I use shampoo and possibly a gentle rub of stain remover. The colours may run so vinegar may help a bit. Wash separately unless colours similar...press out water with towel and dry----do not soak helps to wash when stains are not too old and can do it in the bathroom as soon as possible. I hand wash all my silks and have had no problems apart from the colours running however does not seem to alter the colour so good luck...|||Use woollite.|||you can try soda water, but it might leave 'water spots'...they're hard to clean...

How do you make silk flowers smell like real flowers?

Hi,I just love doing flower arrangements and have just been asked to do some wedding flowers for a bride. She wants silk artificial flowers.

I was just wondering if any one would know how to make silk flowers smell like real fresh flowers, Thanks! :)|||Spray them heavily with body spray or some sort of perfume that smells like a flower!|||You can't. They're fake flowers. Even if you spray them with perfume, it will just smell like perfume-sprayed fake flowers. Ick....|||You can't. That's why people choose fresh flowers is because you can't recreate the smell. You can spray them with floral perfume but that isn't the same.|||Okay, first off - completely avoid perfumes or anything similar. Yuck. Loads of people are allergic to that stuff.

You might be able to try essential oils. They are extracted from the natural flowers, and very potent. A tiny amount in each arrangement should do it.

EDIT: Okay, it seems like very few people have an understanding of what an essential oil is. Like I already said, it's a flower extract. I'm not talking about the artificially scented stuff you can also get in little vials, I'm talking about oil that is pressed out of flowers themselves. So it DOES smell like roses if it's rose oil, lilies if it's lily oil, etc. Some people MAY be allergic, but they usually have a reaction to the oil on their skin, not to the smell. It's flower POLLEN that most people who sneeze around flowers have a problem with. Sadly, almost any question about silk flowers will bring out people passionate about using real flowers, and they'll insult any idea pertaining to silk flowers - even if the "silks or real" debate has already been settled by the poster and is irrelevant.

Essential oils CAN irritate the skin and should be diluted with some kind of vegetable-based oil, and some are easily flammable, so use with caution.|||I would not even attempt scenting the silks, unless the bride requested it. She may be having silks because someone in the bridal party is allergic to real flowers and scents.

See here . . .

http://www.thebridesbouquet.com/roseScen鈥?/a>

if bride does want the flowers scented.|||Hi. You can't. I agree with the others that say....do NOT spray with perfume or any type of "oils." The reason that brides choose silks is usually for the cost and also because some are allergic to the flowers. Spraying them would NOT be a good idea. Besides.....you can make anything artificial smell like the real thing.|||I think it might be possible, actually...

What are some common stores that do silk screening shirt for photos and printouts?

I want to make a Sea Shepherd tee shirt to show my support against Japanese whaling.

Is there an environmentally friendly substitute for silk flowers?

Several loved ones are buried in distant cemeteries and I cannot go there to change out fresh flowers on their graves; yet silk flowers have to be thrown in landfills when they get old. These cemeteries do not allow flowers or shrubs to be planted, because it gets in the way of the lawnmowing.

Are there any alternatives?|||Is this one of those cemeteries that has a built in narrow vase for flowers? Try putting one of those long narrow birdseed poles and tie some raffia or dried flowers to them. This way you decorate and also feed the birds. There is nothing left but a wooden stick when all the seed is eaten away.

If the person was a real animal lover ( as my parents were) this would be something that the deceased could have appreciated.

I found a finch/songbird block that fits perfectly into the metal vase on my parents grave. They fed the birds at their home every day and loved watching them.

Jews also have a custom of placing a small stone on a grave when we have visited. I try to find a smooth or attractive small stone to place there, too.

EDIT: You can also make your own decorative environmentally friendly bird feeder out of a large pine cone, peanut butter, bird seed and raffia tied into a bow, tying the feeder to the vase or perhaps a bouquet of dried flowers.

put peanut butter into each "petal" of the large open pine cone and then drop it into a bag full of bird seed and shake..

unfortunately..sometimes ants and insects also find these treats tasty...

we have had to remove them and then treat around the grave with fire ant killer before..that poses another problem..However, the ants aren't there now at least for a while and the birds are back to enjoying the thistle and seed on a stick.

I must admit that I had put our first feeder attached to SILK roses..not thinking about the environment with this really.|||It's good that you're thinking of this. Have you looked around the cemetery to see if anyone else has found an alternative? What comes to mind immediately is that you can buy flowers made of blown glass, but those are a bit pricey.|||Dried flowers and lovely herbs. Dried lavender is beautiful and of course enviromentally friendly.|||Plastic flowers can be very realistic looking and beautiful. They could be seen as environmentally friendly if you consider that they are reusable; swich them out for holidays and such and them use them again for the same holiday the next year. If you need to just leave them there for a long time, they don't degenerate fast like silk flowers. And if you change them and don't particularly want to keep the old ones you're replacing, you can always put them on a gravesite that has no flowers.

What's the difference between silk fabrics and their cheaper counterparts?

I'm interested in how exactly some fabrics are different when made of silk, cotton or synthetic fibers (what is commonly used) in the way they look, hang and sew. Specifically:

Velvet

Satin

Taffeta

Chiffon

Local stores just don't have the range of products I'd need to try it myself.|||Silk is a natural fiber spun by silk worms. Cotton grows in bolls on cotton plants. Polyester is made from petroleum. Silk and cotton breathe, most polys don't although there are some exceptions with the newer microfibers. Velvet is rarely made of 100% silk anymore, although you can find some silk/rayon blends. Most velvets for are now made from rayon, which is a cellulose fiber derived from some trees and other natural sources. Cotton velvet is called velveteen, cotton satin is called sateen. The "een" refers to cotton. Cottons are less slippery than silks and blends, but any pile fabric requires skill and special care to sew. Taffetas are usually made from either silk or poly. There is a more subtle tissue quality to silk taffeta, but both have a rustle and can work for evening wear. Again, any slippery fabric requires more sewing skill. Silk chiffon is more airy than poly, and sewing it can be like sewing air. It is not a fabric for a beginner!! Poly satins are commonly used in evening wear and they are perfectly acceptable, but are less supple than silk satins. Polyesters and cottons do not water spot if they get damp or wet in just one area, silk does, so a non-drip iron is essential for pressing silk. Silks can be washed before cutting is you want to "suede" the finish, but they still water spot unless fully emersed.

You should try to find a designer fabric store in a larger city and visit it to look at a wider variety of fabrics some time soon. There is no substitute for actually feeling the difference.|||Price, durability, washability, wrinkling, snobbery. All the major issues needed to consider one fabric over another. To me, how a fabric looks, hangs and sews is good info to have, for clothing design school. More important is how is it going to do on a real person, going about their life, and will real person buy the article of clothes.

In my experiences with silk as opposed to other materials that look and act like it, except that they are not as fragile, all have done well. I had a couple "washable silk" blouses {that phrase translates into the material was a blend]. they were, and still are, beautiful. People think they are silk, and say so. My silk blouse hung and draped wonderfully, so did the silk blend. So did the polyester copy. All three survive, the silk one looks a trifle worse for wear.

Lets face it, polyester does not wrinkle like other fabrics do. Other synthetics do wrinkle, just not as much as silk. And you just can't wash silk without staining it.

It all depends on what you specifically want the fabric to do. I listened to a bride on one of those bride shows try to pick out a gown. She liked a silk one. And I heard the sales person tell her that the dress was not practical to put in a bag and take it on a plane half way across the country to the site of her wedding. It would wrinkle. That comment was not lost on me.

Cotton fibers stand the test of time, it wrinkles. Cotton can stand up to, depending on how it is woven, to washing and bleaching.

lycra does not stand up or wear well, it eventually crumples up and gets sticky. .

Silk is classy and sought after. It is snobby to say "it's silk" people like to say that.

Anything slick/shiny is hard to sew on, it slides around on the sewing machine. And silk is not forgiving of having to pin it, handle it in order to get it sewn. And it does not do well with an iron. Silk is a light airy material, and is harder to sew and handle than it is if it is blended, or compared to polyester. I think that silk is lighter in weight than a lot of things.

Sorry could not help more.|||I frequently buy white silk by the yard from Dharma Trading Co. online and dye it myself. Before ordering the first time, I ordered a sample pack of swatches of the silks they offer. For a very low cost (right now it's $6.99) you get about 36 different 4" sample swatches carded and named, so that you know what you are ordering. It is a great way to see, feel and gauge the different silks, and decide what to buy. It won't let you judge draping, but I have no problem with how any of their silks drape.

How do I hand wash a silk dress without ruining it?

I have 2 really beautiful silk dresses and would like to wash them. I made a silly mistake once of putting them in the washing machine with other clothes and some of the colour came out and stained on them but not very noticeable. Now I would like to wash them again. I put one of them into cold water in the sink to hand wash but the water turned brown (as it's an orange/yellow/brown dress)! I'm too afraid to do anymore in case I totally ruin it. What should I do?|||Woolite for colors, is a safe bet. It is made to help delicate fabrics keep there color. Also continue hand washing, or dry clean them.|||Your best bet is to have them dry cleaned. They know how to wash and Iron silk. I think you will be much happier that way.|||dry clean is my only guess

How can I get a single silk flower to float in a bowl of water?

I am making centerpieces for my party. I want to take a wide circular vase and fill it with water and put a fake/silk flower in it, to float on top of the water. My problem is, the water absorbs into the flower material and it sinks just a little bit. Any suggestions on what i can do to make the flower stay above the water?|||spray them with scotchgaurd, it should keep the water from absorbing (do a test model first to make sure it works)|||The above sounds like good advise, but did you think of floating candles instead?

I have 3 beautiful, yes floating flower candles in the same type bowl. Look around if you're interested in that idea.

It's amazing what they have come out with.

Good luck and have fun:)

Can I put silk curtains on a window that gets full sun every day?

I really want silk curtains for my dining room, but the huge window gets full sun every day. I'm worried that the curtains will fade really quickly. I'm also worried the silk will not do enough to block out the light (my furniture needs sun protection, too).

Can I have them backed or something to protect the curtains as well as the furniture?|||You can, but I would get a black-out lining for the back. You could also use some kind of shade underneath and just do silk stationary panels.|||probably backed with rayon acetate or something like that.

you don't need complete sun out to keep your furniture, indirect won't hurt.|||Silk will fade after exposure to direct sunlight for extended periods. You should get a good quality backing for the outside. The backing will give the curtain more body (which is attractive) as well as protect the color.

How do you wash away the smell of certain silk garnment?

I just bought this beautiful dress from Anthropologie and the silk smell. I dried clean it, washed it and it still smell very strongly. I guess it is the kind of silk they used. Does anyone have an idea how to get rid of it?

Thanks|||Hang it outside to air out.:)|||have you tried Fabreeze, I know you can use that on fabric, I'm not sure if it can be used on silks or not the bottle would tell you|||I would return it to the store. When you have a bad smell like that in a silk it's almost impossible to remove. I always smell clothing before purchase. I've had to learn the hard way.|||If the tag says that is machine-washable (it may be, but probably not since its silk), add a cup of vinegar along with the laundry detergent and wash with other delicates. Vinegar removes most smells from fabrics-even cat urine.

Otherwise, try handwashing adding a bit of vinegar to the water and take it outside to dry. The fresh air can help get the smell out.

How do I clean a raw silk lamp shade?

I have a lovely large Eames lamp, and the shade is beige raw silk, but is is generally dirty.I dont want to wash it as it may get water marks or shrink or something. What to do?|||I have several silk lampshades and here is how I clean them. First, use the brush attachment to vacuum off any dirt, dust and hair that has collected on the shade. You cannot use any product that is liquid based or you WILL get water marks. If the shade is small enough, you can place it in a bag filled with salt and use it to scrub the shade to generally clean it and leave it in the bag for a couple of days to absorb odors and dust. If it is very large, you can use dry carpet cleaning granules, like those made by Resolve, Capture, Tech, or Chem-Dry. Carefully agitate the dry cleaning granules on the shade being careful not to snag the natural texture of the silk. Use a very large box to capture the excess granules or do double duty like I do and do it over carpet or upholstery that also needs cleaning. If you do the latter, agitate, then let it dry on the carpet or upholstery and vacuum it up.|||you cann use a spray on foam cleaner or a dry spray and just dust it was a clothe|||Old silk has a tendency to tear, so take care. You can use the brush attachment on your vacuum cleaner, set to low, to get the surface dust off.

After, you will need a dry cleaning spirit. You could use something like dab it off, as long as it is spirit based.

Wet a clean rag with the spirit and use a second dry one to rub it off. The shade will look pretty dark for a while, but silk comes up really well. Remember, the dry cleaning spirit does the work as it evaporates, so no need to rub too hard.|||It depends on how dirty it is. I think the only way to clean silk is by a chemical. i don't know the names or anything, but i used to work for Stanley steemer. We had low moisture cleaning system. So what that means is we couldn't clean it. I think you can call dry chem they might be able to help you. gl|||You could rubb gently with fresh bread,(ie the soft inside not the crust) this takes off dirt and grease, or talcum power sprinkled all over and then gently brush off with a soft brush. if it smells of tobacco, put in a bag or box with bicarbonate of soda to eliminate the odour.

How do I make my ivory silk robe white again?

I have an ivory white robe that I have worned for a while. When it was new, it was really white Now it has a brownish color to it. I've only dry cleaned it with Dryel but that doesn't seem to get rid of the brown hue. Of course, I don't want to use bleach since that would ruin the silk altogether.|||Take it to a professional dry cleaner|||Bleach will only damage it and turn it yellow %26amp; gray. good thinking. Wash in cold water , use natural soap. like the good old fashioned soap bar, soap. Then hang outside in the sun. then sun will bleach your robe the natural way. It might take time but it will get white|||For one thing you never ever bleach silk it will weaken or rot the fibers. Since you have never washed it washing might shrink the silk. Also, Don't forget that washing Silk Changes the hand to the fabric. It's not going to be the same also it wrinkles like crazy and if there are any unfinished edges inside they will ravel. Now, If it's no use to you in the color it is try soaking it in biz you can get this at walmart. Put a half cup of Biz with cold water in a bucket and make sure the whole robe is saturated. Soak for a few hours and check it to see how it's doing. If it's not as white as you want it soak somemore. You can soak it for a couple of days just make sure you keep changing the water. You don't need to add more Biz. When it's as white as you want it Rinse real well..|||I'm not sure that Dryel really cleans anything. I think it just "freshens" things. You should be able to wash it very gently in cool water with Woolite. Then squeeze, don't wring. Let dry, preferably flat. And then, if desired, press lightly to remove wrinkles; or use a steamer.

If Woolite doesn't remove the discoloration, then try some OxyClean in cool water. If necessary, you can let it soak in that solution for as much as 24 hours. I've seen Martha Stewart do that to whiten very old table linens.

Is there an way to make silk fabric sturdy?

I am looking to make a peice of silk fabric stand up straight for an art project. Thanks for your help.|||the iron on (fusible) interfacings work quite well - but depending on what you are making with it - (do you have the shape that you want it to be molded?) - you can use watered down white glue to stiffen up fabric (it won't be wearable anymore) -

the stitch on interfacings tend to come in heavier strengths so depending on how much you need to stand up, you may wish to go this route -

how thin of a silk are you using - what i would do (personally) would be to take the silk to the fabric store (not walmart, but a REAL fabric store) and ask the ladies at the cutting table which interfacing will fuse without making the silk look bad (if the silk is REALLY thin, the fusing may stain the silk)..

good luck!|||I think either interfacing or the strongest glue will still sag somewhat, especially if it's a large piece.

Go to the fabric store and buy a bottle of some stuff called Stiffy or similar.

You could also try heavy duty starch, but I still think it won't be stiff enough.

Consider gluing a piece of cardboard between two sheets of the material

Good luck.|||There are interfacings or stiffeners that you can can buy at fabric shops. Or you could use fusible webbing (it makes two pieces of fabric stick together) and a stiff canvas, maybe. Just be careful applying to silk.

What's the difference between Mulberry and Tussah silk spinning fiber?

I spin my own yarn and have long thought about luxury fibers. SO I have a couple questions really.

First: Whats the difference between the kinds of silk? Any preferences?

Second: Does anyone prefer bamboo over silk? why? Why not?

Finally: I buy fiber from Paradisefibers.net. Does anyone have a better suggestion for roving?|||Tussah is the wild silk. They live out in the wild, in the jungles, and eat whatever they may find that they like out there. The silk may have a colour, depending on the source of leaves. Usually, the moths have left the cocoon, unless they are able to be harvested before they emerge.

Mulberry is cultivated silk. These worms are held in captivity, and are only fed mulberry leaves. The silk will be very white. The silk can be reeled off the cocoon, and will be very fine and very long.

Which is better? That is a personal preference. Each is still silk.

Bamboo is a synthetic produced from the pulp of bamboo plants. It may appear as silk, but has a slight different quality. It may have some colour to it as well. It doesn't handle quite the same as silk. It also seems to take a lot longer to dry.

Where to buy? There are numerous sources, depending where you live. I find that I get the nicest silk from http://www.treenwaysilks.com/ in Canada, but you may have a source closer to you that offers the same selection.

Is there a way to whiten silk clothing that has turned yellow?

I've been told that bleach actually both discolors and damages it. I've also heard that anything with enzymes is also bad since silk is an animal product.... what to do?|||You Can try a mild non-chlorine type of cleaner - like Clorox for Colours - or else just soak the clothes overnight in a solution of mild soap cold water and a teaspoon or hydrogen peroxide.

Silk is a very delicate fabric - in the good old days there was no such think as washable silk - you could only dry clean it - and that did not often work either as the chemicals made it off-colour too.

Try one of the above and see what happens. Good luck|||I was told to try this. iron out, milk, and a bit of detergent. After trying it on a white silk scarf, it came out GREEN. So I simply used oxy clean, and it became white and clean.

If it is an expensive item, send it to the dry cleaners.|||You can try "bluing" or Rit Dye White Wash- both should be found at your local grocer.

Hope that helps

How do I flatten for diplay purposes a silk banner and a silk screen print that have been folded up since 1960

I have a silk screen print from Japan %26amp; a slik banner/pillow cover from the Panama Canel that have been folded up since the '60s. How do I get the wrinkles out to display them flat?|||It's hard to know how delicate they are without seeing them, but I think you'll have to iron them.

This might sound crazy but as long as you're careful and patient it should be fine. Make sure the steam setting on your iron is off, it needs to be absolutely dry and that you have it on a low setting. Place a piece of brown paper over the silk to protect it from scorching - don't use newspaper or anything printed as the ink will transfer and it might be worth getting acid free brown paper which you can get from an arts and crafts shop. Then move the iron across it pressing firmly and working from top to bottom, be slow and systematic.

The other way to do, it if this sounds a little risky is to get some velcro, the stuff that sticks on rather than stitches. Apply a piece to each corner of the piece and then velcro it to a flat wooden board keeping the fabric taut. Then place another board on top and weigh it down with anything heavy you can find - big books bricks etc - it will take a lot longer and the results won't be as good but it's the slightly safer option.

Hope that helps.

What is an easy way to remove corn silk before cooking?

I have some corn on the cob and I want to boil it. However, I want to get most of the silk off of it before cooking. Does anyone have any tips/ tricks as to how to easily remove the silk?

Can you put nails in silk wallpaper without damaging the wall covering material?

I just bought a house. Two rooms have silk wallpaper. I noticed the former owners did not have any nail holes in those walls whatsoever. I wonder if the silk would run or be ruined if I tried to hang a picture on those walls. Does anyone have silk wall coverings on your wall? Can you hang pictures? If so, what did you use to hang them with?|||Any hole, in anything, is "damage". Just use the proper size nail. It's your wall!

The acid from the vomit actually ate through the fabric and though it is now clean, the fabric is ruined/burnt. At least get the acid out before you take it to the cleaner.

What are some tips for silk screen printing?

I have a new silk screen business. I'm having trouble with the "washout of emulsion" after exposing the screen....

It's seems that this part of the printing takes a lot of practice........ In the mean time, I need to start making shirts... What are some things I can do to help me in this process?

What do i need to start a silk screen printing at my current company?

Our company currently sells products that could be silk screen printed for our customers. We'd like to add the capability to silk screen to our business. How many addtional people/time/money/equipment do i need to accomplish this?|||I can understand that you would like to add screen printing as an option for your customers, and the previous answer gave you a pretty detailed synopsis of the process.

I would however, suggest that your company consider outsourcing the products you want to have screened, at least until you can determine that it is something that your customers would like to have on your items. At least then, you can determine the demand.

Most screen printing companies only charge a screen charge, typically $25.00 and then so much per item. One thing that the previous answer didn't address was the different types of ink for different applications.

Can your item withstand the high curing tempratures? If not, then a specialized in will lhave to be used. How many colors are you planning on? Each color will require a seperate screen.

Outsource your first few, and you will have a better idea of what it will take to set up your own screen shop.

Best wishes, and good luck.|||Check Out www.insaneink.com they have an excellent customer service relation. Also I got my shirts customized really cheap. They created graphics too. So check it out.

|||Screen printing techniques primarily require a fine mesh or screen securely stretched around a stiff casing. Segments that are not to be printed are blocked on the screen. To create a print, the screen is placed on a piece of dry paper or fabric and ink is placed on top of it. A rubber blade is used to spread ink consistently across the screen. The ink passes through the open spaces in the screen onto the paper or fabric below after which the screen is removed. This method is usually used for flat or moderately flat surface printing.

This process is a combination of preparation, installation and orientation. In the initial stages, one needs to use cutting tools to create a design. These include art knives, scooping knives, multiple blades and scalpels. One can use these to create a design on a monofilament or multifilament nylon or polyester surface or a photosensitive indirect screen printing film. One needs to have a collection of screen printing inks. With the help of blotting pens, an artist may block the parts that are not to be printed.

The next step involves spreading the ink with spatulas, rubber blades or squeegees. After this step is completed, the artist needs to use screen printing frames. Amateurs may consider using clamps or tapes to hold the article to be printed, in place. While using a photosensitive indirect screen printing film, tabletop printers or garment printing machines have to be used.

Once the printing process is completed, it is important to cure the ink. For this, a textile dryer, flash dryer and a drying board is required. After the printing process is completed, a fabric cleaning brush is used to clean the screen. In some cases, a fast screen wash may be needed to remove ink stains. Instant screen openers may also be sprayed on a dry area of the screen to dissolve the inks and open the mesh after two or three ink coats.

In order to observe the minute details of screen printing, flash bulbs are used. Equipments may be purchased as needed or a screen printing kit containing all the necessary items can be purchased. Until an amateur artist gains a better understanding of the process, one may use ready-to-use stencils or designs in the initial stages. Kits often come with manuals, which are indispensable guides for beginners and advanced users alike.

How can I prevent silk clothing from getting water stain?

I bought BCBG Maxazria top which is made out of silk 4 months ago. But I've never been able to wear it in public because I always put my wet hands on the top. The top gets water stain so easily and it has to be dry cleaned so every time I get my wet hands on it, I take it to a cleaner to remove the stain.

Anyway, the top is really cute but it seems like I can't really wear the top outside unless I have to be really really careful of what I'm doing. But I'm just wondering if there is some kind of spray or somthing that can prevent it from getting water stain. Does anybody know how I can prevent it from getting the stain?|||There is a product called Scotch Guard (Spray, Comes in a white can with red and black checkers) that protects many materials from water. Check the label first to see if silk is safe. Try a test area first (one that will not be noticeable if things backfire)

How much does vintage silk brocade sell for?

I have some silk brocade fabric that was made in Hong Kong in the late 1960's. My father purchased it while serving as a Marine. I'm not sure how much I have, but it is 30 inches wide. How much do you think I can sell it for per yard on ebay?|||Not very much probably. Chinese brocades from the 20's are going for under $20 a yard unless it has some sort of special historical significange or something. All Chinese brocade is about 30" because that's the width of the looms, too.

Cost depends on a variety of factors such as pattern, quality of the materials and workmanship, age, weft threads intact, and preservation of the fabric. I recently got a 4 yard cut for $20 and it's from the very early 30s.

But would the Goldfish try to eat the silk plants too?|||They might try, but they shouldn't be able to bite through the silk.

Silk plants should be fine.|||as long as they don't have metal inside the stems the silk are ok.

plastic plants are fine too, I use them all the time.

Is silk chocolate milk as good as people say it is?

I've heard a hail-storm of compliments about the Silk Chocolate milk but the name-brand Silk just scares me because of the fact that it's skim milk. Is it actually really good? It is made with soy beans, so it can sometimes give you gas from the beans, although they do filter it to get out most of the fiber. It is sweet, so read the label.|||Silk is soy milk, not skim cow milk. How do you store silk flowers without crushing them?

Can anyone suggest how to store silk flowers so as not to crush them. Some flowers can snap back but some can't. I'd rather not find out which ones of mine can't as they are expensive. I'm looking for a way to store them in an upright position in a small walk-in closet. I have them loosely packed in boxes now but this is not an ideal long-term storage remedy for me. I want them organized and in pristine condition.

Thanks for the help!|||A shoe holder would work. The kind that hangs from the pole, and has dozens of plastic pockets.|||Using a small walk in closet.....get some inexpensive upright vases. Plastics from Target, etc.....arrange and set the flowers in the container and then in a large leaf bag...and tie. Don't crowd them, however, enough to keep them in place. You can even get some "packing popcorn" to use for stabilizing from bottom up. It's almost better to keep them upright "close" for support. You can most likely get 8-10 containers in a 3-4 ft space.|||Unless they were handmade where you purchased them they were shipped bundled together in a cardboard box. You can lightly suppor the petals with some tissue if you are afaid of crushing them but for the most part you can pack them into boxes laying them in alternating rows so that each flower head is slightly below the next and then return in the same manner fromthe bottom to the top. store flat on shelf. What, exactly, is the silk road, and who is Marco Polo?

I have a homework assignment, and all the articles I find are too in-depth for me to comprehend. Can someone give me a brief description of Marco Polo and the Silk Road?|||the silk road was a trade route from China to Europe, Marco Polo was a merchant who travelled to China from Italy via the silk road. more information can be found by using a search engine and the internet.|||The silk road was a series of routes covering more than 4,000 miles in Ancient China. It began in northern China and went west along the Great Wall of China. It was a great trade route for the ancient Chinese.

Marco Polo (1254-1324), is probably the most famous Westerner traveled on the Silk Road. He excelled all the other travelers in his determination, his writing, and his influence. His journey through Asia lasted 24 years. He reached further than any of his predecessors, beyond Mongolia to China. He became a confidant of Kublai Khan (1214-1294). He traveled the whole of China and returned to tell the tale, which became the greatest travelogue.|||The Silk Road was a series of interconnecting ancient trade routes between Asia and Europe. Silk was the primary export of Asia back then - hence the catchy name.

Marco Polo was an explorer from Venice, the first European to travel and document the Silk Road.|||The Silk Road is the ancient trade route that Marco Polo followed to China as one of the very first Europeans to go there. Why are my silk plants in my aquarium turning brown?

The leaves on some of the silk plants in my aquarium are turning brown, along with some of the gravel. It's very spotty but I notice more and more brown every day. The aquarium is filtered, not over stocked, I do 25% water changes every week, etc. Everything is otherwise fine. What could be causing this and what can I do to stop it?|||Soop Nazi is absolutely correct! It's brown "algae". Your nitAtes are high. You've got decomposing organic matter coming from somewhere in your tank. If your certain your tank is adequately filtered, your using silk plants, and the tank is not over stocked, then here are a few possibilities:

1 - You've got driftwood or natural shells in the tank that are decomposing. This is a source of nitrates.

2- You're beneficial bacteria colony has become inadequate.

3- You're not vacuuming the substrate adequately.

Bottom line, you need to identify the source of the nitrAtes and correct it. Rinse the "algae" from your silk plants, rinse the gravel (section at a time to avoid further depletion of bacteria), clean the walls and get your water chemistry under control.

Hopefully, this will help.

Good Luck|||Get an algae eater|||Its probably brown Algae.

Besides water changes... have you tested the water levels?

Do you make sure not to have the light on constantly? that can cause brown algae.

I've had issues with Algae... but I've never had issues with brown algae causing illness.

Test your pH, Nitrates, Nitrites and amonias

make sure you don't leave your light on 24/7

and before you do the next change... wipe down the brown algae (Its easy to just wipe)

take out the plants and wash them down before replacing them

then do a water change... maybe a bit more than 25% for this time around.

see if that helps.

you can also go to an aquatics specialty store and ask for advice.

depending on what type of tank you have you can also ask if there are algae eaters that will feed off of brown algae.|||Algae, Clean the plants, I just had the same thing and I took the plants and soaked them in bleach and water for a couple hours and just like new. Good Luck..%26gt;%26lt;%26gt;:)~|||I would be willing to bet you have high nitrates and high phosphorous levels in your tank. Depending on how long your tank has been running, it may be ending its cycle, and experiencing a buildup of nitrate (prefect algae fertilizer). Brown algae is not a true algae, it is instead a bacteria. Though not harmful, it is unsightly. Because it is a bacteria, it does not rely on photosynthesis to produce food, it can rely solely on nutrients in the water. Brown algae usually occurs from a combination of weak lighting and high nitrates. Try to upgrade your lighting so it is more penetrating and spectrum specific (6700 Kelvin) as well as thoroughly vacuuming the gravel weekly and changing your filter media monthly. This will either prevent the algae completely, or turn it green (which is MUCH more attractive and sometimes desirable). Email me if you have any questions.

Soop Nazi

EDIT: Not all algae eating fish (Otos, Plecos, Algae Eaters) get large. There are fancy Plecos (Clown, Bristlenose, Bulldog) that stay less than 6 inches, and Otos stay around 2 inches. ALL fish produce waste though, which often does more harm than good, by adding more nutrients to the water for the algae to consume. The best way to remove algae is manually or preventing it all together.|||It'a Algae. Are you leaving your tank in the sun? If it's a freshwater get a pleco.|||Its probably algae. Go to your fish store and ask what you can add to the water to get rid of it without harming the fish. Don't know what type of filter you have, but you may need to replace any material in the filter.|||It's algae dear. When you add nutrients(in this case fish food) to water something is going to grow and that something is algae. Algae can be green; red or brown.

Wipe it off the sides of your tank and wipe it off your plants. Make sure you turn the light off at night and make sure your tank is not in front of a window.

You can put your plants in some bleach water BUT use very little bleach and rinse, rinse your plant until you can no longer smell the bleach.

You can get an Algae Eater but they need a place to hide in during the day, they are only active at night after you turn out the lights and they do get VERY large. It also depends on how large your tank is and how many fish you already have in it.

Never put more than the recommended number of fish in you tank. To many fish and they will die.

What's the difference between silk screened posters and digital posters?

What's the difference between silk screened posters and digital posters? My friends collect movie/concert posters and they say silk screen is the best. Why is that?|||Digital printing is a more recent development where printing plates are used which result in a quicker and less expensive process. Inkjet and Laser printers are common examples which use the digital printing technique. Digital printers are very effective wen it comes to short turn around. The overall cost is highly reduced because the cost of building the plates is eliminated, whereas Silk Screen printing involves construction of a stencil usually out of a silk screen, where blank areas are coated with an impermeable substance and then ink is forced through the mesh onto the printing surface. Screen printing is considered more durable in terms of quality and it is highly cost effective when it comes to bulk printing. Digitally printed posters lose their texture and fade away over time but this is not the case with silk screened posters as they can retain their for quality for a relatively longer period when compared to Digitally printed posters.|||Modern mass produced movie posters aren't produced by silk screen printing. They are usually printed using lithographic printing presses. Old movie posters may have been reproduced using silk screen or lithographic printing or even linocuts.

Digital printing can either involve inkjet printing, or lithographic plates can be produced digitally too. No old movie posters were printed digitally - because the technology wasn't invented then!|||Ink quality. Digital printer toner/ink most of the time is about cost effectiveness rather than about how long the product is going to be around. Posters are made with a cheaper ink that fades over time faster than silk screen ink.

Can someone tell me if Dupioni silk is made by harming silk worms or not?

My friend wants to use the Dupioni silk from India to make fashion bags and wants to make sure that silk worms are not harmed during this process.
